- Story Text: An anti-Taliban group has seized control of the
eastern city of Jalalabad, an area which housed al Qaeda
training camps.
The strategic eastern city of Jalalabad, an area which
housed al Qaeda training camps, commands the road between
Kabul and the Pakistani border.
There were not many reports of fighting in and around
Jalalabad.
"We will now take over and we assure that people don't
have to worry they will not have any problems because of us.
We urge people to go about their business as usual we foresee
no problems, security is now in place," said one Mujahideen
fighter.
Apparently, as they left the Taliban handed over power to
the head of the local militia in the eastern province of
Nangarhar, Maulavi Khalis.
"There was a power vacuum and we decided to take over so
as to prevent looting and bloodshed. All the militia leaders
within the province asked us to maintain security here," said
Mujahideen Commander Anwar Ul Haq.
Many Taliban fighters were believed to have retreated into
the tribal areas of Pakistan.
