- Story Text: People in the southern Shi'ite holy city of Najaf
started to recruit new police officers as a first step to
take over from the U.S. forces.
Several people lined up outside Najaf's main police
station on Tuesday (June 1) to be recruited to serve in the
police force.
The move is seen as a step by police to take over from
U.S. forces after their withdrawal from the city.
Negotiations are currently to reach an agreement with
Mehdi Army , militia of rebel Shi'ite cleric Moqtada
al-Sadr.
