I guess because they don't really know where to send the mail to, so they send it to 2 World Trade Center and they know we will find where those companies have relocated to. Also, there's a lot of companies that I don't get to see the people because they're such big companies they send courier services to pick them up. "So I'm not able to ask them is this person okay, or is this person okay. So, that weighs on my mind. Because, you know, I wish I had given them all my phone number so they could have all called me to tell me I'm okay. So, I wouldn't have to worry about them. But you know, I do and it's rough. I picture their faces, did they get out? Are they home? You know are they missing?" 2.34 20. SLV OF MAIL TRUCK PULLING OUT OF CENTRAL LOADING DOCK 2.39 21. - Story Text: The World Trade Center's zipcode 10048 no longer
exists. Because of damage done to their building, the United
States Post Office has been forced to relocate their entire
operation from 90 Church Street to the main post office in
Manhattan on West 33rd street.
The United States Post Office has dealt with tragedies
before, but nothing of this magnitude. The United States Post
Office located at 90 Church Street, which delivered to the
World Trade Center Zipcode 10048, was surrounded by buildings
seven and five that have collapsed. All 700 workers from that
location have been evacuated and relocated to the main
Manhattan post office on West 33rd Street. At the new
location, incoming mail for zipcodes 10048 and 10282 is being
sorted and placed in huge bins with the name of the
appropriate tower customer attached.
The USPS, which received more than 85,000 pieces a mail a
day for the World Trade Center and the Church Street facility
which processed about 1 million pieces of mail a day, have
agreed to hold unclaimed mail for up to three months. With
16,500 addresses still affected by the red zone, there is no
indication when the post office will return to normality.
Patricia McGovern, Communications Program Specialist for
the United States Postal Service said, "We're not delivering
in those areas, so people are picking up. People are
forwarded. And unfortunately, there are some who have not
picked up yet and we can speculate...some are resetting up new
offices, some we just haven't heard from."
To handle the enormous disaster, the USPS which normally
couriers the mail around the country by airplane, was forced
to resort to using ground transportation more. Calling upon
its 210,000 permanently leased trucks and 6,000 additional
leased trucks, the USPS continues to employ more ground
transportation than before September 11.
All of the USPS workers are accounted for. No-one was lost
in the terrorist attacks. However, for the mail carrier who
worked in the building, the tragedy is not over. Rafael
Feliciano, who has worked for the USPS for over 6 years and
been delivering mail for 3 years to 2 World Trade Center
Floors 78 to 110, said people were still sending mail to this
route. He said: "I guess because they don't really know where
to send the mail to, so they send it to 2 World Trade Center
and they know we will find where those companies have
relocated to."
For Rafael and others, uncertainty still hangs in the air
for many of those who were once a part of zipcode 10048.
