- Story Text: Iraqi MP and senior policeman targeted by car bombs
in a day of violence in Iraq.
An Iraqi member of parliament was assassinated on
Tuesday (June 28, 2005) after a car bomb was detonated by a
suicide bomber near Baghdad. There were a number of other
bombings in the country, targeting a senior police officer
and a hospital.
The head of the northern city of Kirkuk's traffic
police, Colonel Sallar Mohammed Amin, survived the attack
on him, but two of his guards were killed and five others
suffered severe burns. A woman who was shopping in the area
also suffered minor burns to her face and arms
The attack happened in central Kirkuk, about 250 km
(150 miles) north of Baghdad. Kurds, Arabs and Turkmen
ethnic groups have staked competing claims to the capital
of the big northern oilfield, which has seen frequent
attacks in recent months.
Meanwhile, a member of Iraq's parliament, three of his
bodyguards and his son were killed by a suicide car bomb
attack on their convoy in the northern outskirts of Baghdad.
Dhari Ali al-Fayadh, a member of the ruling
Shi'ite-dominated political alliance, was the second member
of Iraq's newly elected parliament to be assassinated since
the Shi'ite- and Kurdish-led government took office two
months ago.
"This morning while the Sheikh was leaving his house
and forwarding to his work at the National Assembly, a car
with one of the terrorists exploded, killing him and his
son," said witness Sheikh Eissa al- Musawi.
As well on Tuesday, a suicide bomber dressed in a
police uniform blew himself up in front of a hospital in
the town of Musayyib, 75 km (40 miles) south of Baghdad,
killing three people and wounding 13, police said.
A police spokesman said the bomber blew himself up at
the police guard station near the entrance the hospital.
One of those killed and four of the injured were police
officers, he said.
"At the start of the working day at around 0813 a.m.
and in the peak of work hours and rush of patients, a
terrorist bomber blew himself up in front of al-Musayyib
hospital," said one of the hospital medical staff.
Suicide bombings by attackers in police or military
uniform have become an increasing threat in Iraq, where
violence has worsened since the election of the new
government.
In the southern Iraqi city of Samawa police opened fire
on a crowd of demonstrators on Tuesday, wounding seven
protesters, including one man who was shot in the head.
Four policemen were also injured by stones, doctors said.
Nearly 2,000 unemployed Iraqis were demonstrating in
central Samawa because they had not been given jobs. Samawa
is 270 km (170 miles) south of Baghdad.
