- Story Text: Roadside bomb goes off near U.S. and British embassy
offices in Basra, one person killed and two wounded.
A roadside bomb detonated near the U.S. and British
embassy offices in the southern Iraq city of Basra on
Saturday (September 11, 2004), killing one person and wounding
two, including a woman.
The person killed were travelling in a vehicle at the
time of the blast, some 50 metres (yards) from the embassy
compound.
Those wounded were passers-by. The U.S. embassy in
Baghdad and U.S. military officials had no immediate
comment. The nationality of those killed was not known.
The bomb went off about 50 metres from the compound,
which is also located close to a palace housing a British
military base.
The key oil city of Basra, where British forces are
deployed, has witnessed frequent clashes between insurgents
and U.S.-led forces. There have been frequent car bomb and
roadside bomb blasts in the city over the past 17 months.
