- Story Text: Naval frogmen and more than 100 police kept a close guard on the British super liner Queen Elizabeth 2 as she lay in dock at Lisbon on Tuesday (April 17). The Cunard ship is on her way to Israel with 620 passengers aboard - most of them American Jews.
Police guarded the approaches to the quayside during the morning as the ship came into the Cais Da Rocha De Conde De Obidos, in the Tagus Estuary. The ship was scheduled for a 12-hour stopover.
The security measures are reported as the strongest ever seen in the Port of Lisbon. They were not to be relaxed until the liner left later in the day for Ashdod, Israel where she is due on Saturday (April 21).
There was a strict ban on visitors to the ship or into the dock. The Queen Elizabeth 2 is taking her passengers to Israel for the 25th anniversary celebrations of the nation's founding as a state.
Despite the fears of Arab guerrilla attacks on the ship, her passengers are reported to be more than satisfied with the security arrangements. Some 350 of them went a sightseeing tour of Lisbon in buses and cars during the stopover. Despite the stringent security, passengers had complete freedom of movement and were visibly happy.
Among the special security precautions taken for the safety of the liner - which left Southampton on Sunday (April 15) - are a group of British Special Air Service Troops and Royal Marine Commandos who are travelling to Israel aboard the ship. They are in plain clothes. Passengers report that the British security agents have hardly been noticed during the voyage so far.
All passengers were given identity cards with photographs which they had to produce when returning to the ship.
