However it is dependent on competent authorities as to what particular law they want to press in to service and when they want to press it into service. Once the decision has been taken things would take their course, if at alll it is taken." 3.13 (U1) KARACHI, PAKISTAN (FEBRUARY 25, 2002) (REUTERS) 6. - Story Text: The chief law officer handling the investigation into
the killing of U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl has explained why
the court had allowed a police remand for another two weeks 4
of the 11 suspects in custody.
Sindh Province Advocate General Raja Qureshi on Tuesday
(February 26, 2002) said police needed the extra time to
gather more evidence, including the body and the murder
weapon.
"We have obtained remand for the second time within the
legal framework under Anti-Terrorist Act. Investigations have
revealed that discoveries have been made but the basis on
which the remand was obtained was that the body has yet to be
recovered, murder weapon yet to be recovered, people brought
for identification tests and investigation is in process,"
said Qureshi, whose position resembles that of a state
attorney general in the United States.
He also said Pakistan's anti-terrorism laws, under which
the kidnappers of Pearl would be tried, provided a maximum
penalty of death by hanging and a minimum sentence of life
imprisonment for involvement in kidnap or murder.
Qureshi refused to comment on possible U.S. moves to have
the suspects extradited and tried in America.
Karachi, where Pearl disappeared on January 23 while
working on a story about Pakistani Islamic radicals possibly
linked to Osama bin Laden, is capital of Sindh Province.
