- Story Text: Rebels attack Iraq police station, kill 13 officers.
Insurgents attacked an Iraqi police station in
Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit on Tuesday (December
28, 2004), killing 13 officers and wounding two, police said.
It was not clear if the guerrillas suffered any
casualties in the attack that occurred around 7:30 a.m.
(0430 GMT).
A U.S. military spokesman in Tikrit said he was unaware
of the incident.
Since Saddam was captured near Tikrit one year ago, the
city has been relatively quiet compared to other parts of
the Sunni Arab north, although roadside bombs and other
attacks do occur.
Iraq's new, U.S.-trained security forces are prime
targets for Sunni insurgents bent on wrecking next month's
election and police stations have been attacked many times
before.
