- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: Almost 500 cadets took part in the Sovereign's Parade at the Sandhurst Military Academy in Surrey, England on Thursday (7 April). About 40 of those were from countries outside the United Kingdom.
SYNOPSIS: Thursday's parade was the 63rd under the name of Sovereign's Parade. It was known as the Passing Out Parade until July, 1948, when the salute was taken by His late Majesty King George the Sixth. The parade's designed to emphasise that the senior officer cadets are parading at Sandhurst for the last time before receiving their Sovereign's commission.
This year the cadets include men from numerous African countries, including Nigeria and Kenya, Australia, Canada and several Arab countries are also represented. Since 1947 cadets from 61 different countries have been trained at Sandhurst. All candidates now under-take a seven-month standard military course, at the end of which they're commissioned.
The salute was taken on behalf of the Queen this year by General Sir Roland Gibbs, the Chief of the General Staff. Among the guests were the High Commissioners of Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi Oman, Qatar and Singapore. Sandhurst is Britain's top military training school for officer cadets. A number of heads of state outside the United Kingdom have been trained there.
