- Story Text: In Spain, about 100,000 people took part in a mass demonstration on Sunday (12 March) against the building of a nuclear power plant at Lemoniz, near Bilbao in Northern Spain. The proposed plant is part of Government plan to set up a grid of uranium-fuelled power stations in the region.
SYNOPSIS: The ominous sign of the octopus, taken over by the protesters to symbolise their fears, was very much in evidence as the marchers assembled in the centre of Lemoniz. Demonstrators had travelled all over Spain to attend the rally, but in spite of the vast numbers taking part there were no reports of clashes with the police.
From the town the marchers moved on to the site of the proposed power station. Local Basque residents, already disenchanted by the central government's failure to grant them autonomy, joined in the protest to express their fears of dangers from pollution. Fishermen from the nearby coastal villages fear fish could be driven away.
Speakers at the rally included representatives from left-wing political parties and the trade unions. many of them said the plant was a crime against the Basque people. Other speakers read out messages of support from anti-nuclear groups in Belgium, France, West Germany and Australia.
