- Story Text: "A NEW EPOCH IN SHIP DESIGN" -- THAT'S THE CLAIM MADE FOR A JAPANESE CARGO SHIP, THE 10,647-TON "YAMASHIRO MARU", NOW BERTHED IN LONDON AFTER A SUCCESSFUL MAIDEN VOYAGE FORM KOBE. BROAD IN THE BEAM WITH A BULBOUS BOW, SHE IS SLENDER IN STEM AND STERN.
HER BUILDERS, MITSUBISHI OF NAGASAKI, SAY THESE CHARACTERISTICS AMOUNT TO AN "EPOCHAL" HULL FORM, DEVELOPED AFTER YEARS OF RESEARCH. THIS FORM, THEY CLAIM, GIVES THE SHIP MORE KNOTS ON LESS FUEL THAN A CONVENTIONAL SHIP'S HULL.
COMPARING THE "YAMASHIRO MARU" TO A PREVIOUS CLASS, THE BUILDERS SAY SHE HAS 17,000 CUBIC FEET BALE CAPACITY AGAINST 13,000; 20 KNOTS AGAINST 16; AND A SMALLER CREW -- ALL PRODUCING A 30 PERCENT IMPROVEMENT IN OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY. THE COST IS SAID TO BE THE SAME.
ATTRACTING BRITISH EXPERTS DOWN TO LONDON DOCKS, THE CARGO SHIP ALSO BOASTS A NUMBER OF SPECIAL FEATURES. EACH CREW MEMBER HAS AN AIR-CONDITIONED INDIVIDUAL CABIN; THE SEPARATE ENGINE CONTROL ROOM ALSO IS AIR-CONDITIONED; WHILE DECK OFFICERS USE "WALKIE-TALKIE" RADIO SETS FOR KEEPING IN CONTACT WHEREVER THEY ARE ON THE SHIP.
