- Story Text: Prime Minister designate Rachid Karami praised Egypt's reopening of the Suez Canal saying that it was another gesture of peace from the Arab world.
Mr. Karami, speaking in Beirut on Thursday (5 June), blamed Israel for the closure of the canal in 1967 during the Six-Day War. It was reopened by President Sadat of Egypt in Port Said on Thursday.
Mr. Karami said the Israelis should be made responsible for the resulting damage to the international economy following the canal's closure.
The reopening of the canal had great economic significance, especially for Lebanon.
