- Story Text: Britain's grand old man of fashion, Hardy Amies, revealed his new collection of autumn and winter fashions in London on Tuesday (July 17th) - his 64th birthday.
His clothes, feminine and soft, set a new trend in day lengths. They were hemmed just below the knee and the skirts were mainly pleated.
For evening, the models swirled in full and diaphanous skirts.
Mr Amies' collection relied on two distinctive sleeves: raglan for coats and batwing for evening dresses. The day dresses were shirt-style, emphasising the waist. This was also featured in his evening wear, by satin sashes. The collection, he explained, put "everything in the right place."
The pill box was Mr Amies choice for hats, softened for evening by veils. For colour he favoured black for evening and soft greys, browns and reds for day wear.
Mr Amies designed the Queen's wardrobe for her recent visit to Canada. He also designed the wardrobe for her coming visit to Australia.
SYNOPSIS: Britain's grand old man of fashion, Hardy Amies, revealed his new collection for autumn and winter in London on Tuesday.
The clothes are very feminine - soft in line, colour and fabrics, Evening dresses mostly have batwing sleeves. The pillbox, dressed up with veils for glamorous nights, was clearly Mr Amies' favourite in hats.
This cerise and purple creation is typical of his diaphanous, wide-skirted evening dresses. The waist is back in favour, and emphasised by a satin sash. The dress itself is organza.
The coats were mainly raglan-sleeved, like this one in white wool crepe. Underneath, a day dress with soft pleats in the new, slightly longer hemlength. The collection, Mr Amies explained, puts everything back in its right place: everything is feminine, nothing angular.
This short evening dress is in fine brown checked wool, shot with silver. Browns, greys and blacks are the dominant colour in the collection.
A soft brown tweed suit, again with pleated skirt. The muff is brown fox, and the shirt is beige silk.
The originals are beyond the reach of most budgets, but these will be some of the shapes, colours, and textures seen this autumn and winter.
