- Story Text: On the first day of London Fashion Week, Italian designer Miuccia Prada presented her Miu Miu collection, her new label for younger people.
After the show, celebrities joined Prada for a party, celebrating London's revival as one of the coolest fashion capitals in the world.
Miuccia Prada's show on Sunday (February 23) was dominated by grey, black and sequins, and the clothes modelled by girls wearing no accessories in order to highlight the outfits.
For the first time, Prada, the creative force behind one of the biggest cult labels of the decade, chose London to preview her Miu Miu range.
Grey, blue and military green dominated the demure designs.
Only the sparkly sequined shoes gave the outfits some colour.
At one stage the very high heeled shoes caused one of the models to trip and she had to take them off before continuing walking down the cat-walk.
Prada said the inspiration for the show was the idea of happiness and that you do not have to be rich to be glamouros.
She also said the Miu Miu range was a different and younger aspect of what she liked.
"Usually it is what I was not able to do for Prada because it was too young and too strange and that is why we started to do something else," Prada said, explaining the difference between Prada and Miu Miu.
London Fashion Week is the first event on the European fashion calendar, ahead of Paris and Milan. It is the first opportunity for media and buyers to catch a glimpse of the European autumn/winter 1997 collections.
Apart from buyers from all over the world, the show attracted a celebrity audience with stars like Bjork and Bob Geldorf in the front row seats.
British designer Vivienne Westwood, who launched London Fashion Week with her Red Label show earlier in the day, also came to watch her fellow designer.
The celebrities later showed up for an after-show party.
Asked about what he thought of London as the new hip fashion capital, Sir Bob Geldorf said he had always thought it was the best city on the planet.
"It is more happening than New York and more relaxed than Paris," he said.
But Vivienne Westwood did not agree, saying it was "completely boring as usual".
Either way, the next five days will see designers such as Owen Gaster, Nicole Farhi and Alexander McQueen showing their new designs to an adoring public.
