- Story Text: Two succesful British designers at opposite ends of their careers have shown at the start of London Fashion week.
Newcomer Matthew Williamson and Vivienne Westwood both stayed true to form with their latest collections.
Matthew Williamson was showing for just the second time at London Fashion Week on Saturday (February 21), but after the success of his Spring/Summer 1998 collection there was huge demand for space at his show.
The young designer again produced a range of embroidered silk and cashmere, called "Future Heirloom", which was well received by the audience of fashion journalists and buyers.
Williamson has a policy of creating a limited number of outfits and only supplying a very few stores worldwide. He says he is wary of over-stretching himself at the start of his commercial career. For his last collection he created just 11 outfits; for Autumn/Winter 1998, it was increased to 15.
Stepping out on the catwalk for Williamson was Jade Jagger, daughter of Rolling Stones star Mick; she also designed jewellery for the show."Supermodel" Jodie Kidd appeared wearing the last outfit of the show - a crepe evening dress with embroidered fireworks and a headdress to match.
Later on Saturday "Queen of Punk", Vivienne Westwood, showed her Red Label diffusion collection twice at the Cafe de Paris in London's Picadilly.
Westwood's designs were as quirky as usual, topped with extravagent hairstyles and wigs. Her trademark tartan showed up in straight-legged trousers.Westwood has used the fabric since her punk designs of the 1970's.
Top British aristocrat model, Honor Fraser, drew applause after attempting unsuccesfully to slide down a stair bannister.
Fifty-seven year-old Westwood says the woman who wears her Red Label designs is a "young lady" who dresses to be noticed and to enjoy herself.
Westwood began designing clothes in 1971 with no formal training.Initially she worked in partnership with music producer and punk impressario Malcolm McLaren, before going solo with her own designs.
Westwood held her first catwalk show in 1981 and now shows her main Gold Label in Paris every year.
