- Story Text: INTRO: Italian fashion house Fendi and designer Anna Molinari have stunned audiences with their latest designs at the Milan spring/summer 1998 fashion week.
Designer Karl Lagerfeld produced leather and fur bikinis for next summer's beaches when he unveiled his collection for the Italian Fendi fashion house on Tuesday (October 7).
Lagerfeld showed that fur and leather could be used for cool summer clothes just as well for winter warmers. Fur was trimmed on brief bikinis but also in swirls of mink embroidery on long black evening dresses, or edging tiny black slip dresses.
Supermodel Kate Moss appeared in a plain black leather bikini with a wide bodice top and tiny squared pants. There were also one-pieces like Edwardian men's bathing suits, elegant in plain black.
Lagerfeld used leather on bare skin, too, in simple, zip-through dresses, or in a glossy navy jacket tailored to hug the curve of the back. Emphasis was on naked hips revealed under tie-on tablier pants and skirts.
But there were also romantic retro touches, as in dusky-coloured suits with long sleeves ruffled at the upper arm or ruched at the seams.
Designer Anna Molinari went against a current trend on Wednesday (Ocotober 8) this season for Lolita-look very young models, and dedicated her collection to mature and confident women.
She opened the show with a striking grey-haired model, Benedetta Barzini, who was a top model in the 1960s. As a backdrop to the collection, she presented the names of dozens of "precious women," including British actress and MP Glenda Jackson, singers Maria Callas, Yoko Ono and Marianne Faithfull.
They were described in a statement as "icons of great strength and beauty".
Skirts were all long, but subtly sexy, with deep slashes behind. Fabrics were natural with gabardine, brocade, lace, cotton and linen chanel checks, and sumptuous raw sik with orchid prints.
Colours were fresh and sharp focusing on blue tones, navy, ink, aquamarine blue with flashes of silver, black cream, ivory and orange.
