- Story Text: Designers Gai Mattiolo and Rushdi Mahlas have shown their new collections on the third day of Milan fashion week Italian designer Gai Mattiolo presented his latest collection in Milan on Sunday (March 1), with a display of luxury and opulence which won the hearts of even the most hardened fashion cynics.
The highlight of the show was a black evening suit valued at a million pounds, with two emeralds and a ruby as buttons on the jacket. The jewels, a 101-carat blood-red burmese ruby, and two 36-carat emeralds, were surrounded by tiny diamonds.
The dramatic ensemble was modelled by Naomi Campbell, whilst her mother, Valerie, who in the past has graced the catwalk for Gai Mattiolo, watched from the audience.
Mattiolo's collection emphasised the lines of the female form, highlighting collars and cuffs, lining them with fur.
Overcoats were long and imposing, sweeping the floor. And although heels started off low, by eveningwear they reached dizzying heights.
The new Rushdi Malhas collection presented a futuristic vision of fashion as a dark and sombre affair.Muted colours dominated his architecturally-inspired creations.
Tailored ensembles with diagonal lines and seams down the back featured strongly.Apron-like flaps covered the fronts of dresses, and hoods were everywhere.Another recurring theme was the one-sleeve and one-shoulder dress.
