- Story Text: Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto broke with his own traditions on Tuesday (October 11) by inserting flashes of colour into his usual monochrome styles.
The first half of the show for his ready to wear collection was almost entirely black. Clerical robes were belted with twine or sometimes, in an ode to punk, fastened with a sole safety pin.
Signature black dresses with holes scissored beneath the arms, shoulders hanging down the back and a good bit of pouching and tucking showed off Yamamoto's tailoring skills but cried out for colour.
Everything was long, nearly ankle-length except for a few overall shorts with tattered tops.
So when a pale aqua dress finally emerged on the catwalk and splashes of bright red, purple or orange mushroomed on the monastic apparel, applause erupted and many in the audience wished they had come sooner.
The show climaxed with a series of sumptuous Japanese ceremonial kimonos in gold brocade and traditional silks.
