- Story Text: INTRO: John Rocha has dazzled the London Fashion Week crowds once again with an Autumn/Winter 97/98 collection that married eastern and western motifs.
Oriental and Celtic themes collided on the catwalk as Dublin-based but Hong Kong-born designer John Rocha unveiled his womenswear collection in London on Wednesday (February 26).
Rich and abundant textures in blacks, reds and creams dominated. Cashmere and mohair coatings with embroidered and fleeced affects blended with flowing silk georgettes and devored velvets.
Silhouettes were both sharp and supple, masculine suits and dresses had crescent sleeves.
Rocha described the collection as a tribute to Hong Kong in 1997, the year the British colony returns to Chinese sovereignty.
Rocha, who originates from Hong Kong, said he gets a lot of inspiration from his grandmother who wore clothes with big sleeves. He said he lives in Dublin so it's almost like Susy Wong/Maureen O'Hara dancing together.
London fashion Week, now in day four, continued to bask in the international media spotlight with most observers saying it was the best week for several years.
Lisa Armstrong of Vogue (UK) dismissed criticism from top British designer Vivienne Westwood earlier this week that London Fashion Week was a "bore" and said Westwood had been very ungenerous with her criticism.
Fashion-watchers are now looking forward to Alexander McQueen's show on Thursday evening.
