- Story Text: - INTRO: Northern Ireland design student Declan Kearney has won the 1997 Smirnoff Fashion Awards in London, at a ceremony hosted by Red or Ded founder Wayne Hemmingway.
Declan beat 27 entrants from around the world on Monday (November 24) to win the coveted 10,000 pound sterling (15,000 U.S. dollar) prize and an opportunity to study at the prestigious fashion school, Central St.Martins School in London.
Declan's inspiration of the theme 'Decadence' was femininity.
He concentrated on the millenium and the instability as it approaches. He looked at ways for women to express her femininity without losing her strengths and powers. He offers decadent pieces which, in his view, embrace a modern desire for individuality.
Second prize was awarded to 27 year old Tatiana Popova from Bulgaria and third place went to UK student, John Boddy from Hull.
The awards were presented in front of some of the world's best known international fashion designers, the media and potential employers. The panel of judges was the most celebrated to date - including Alexander McQueen, Jasper Conran, Antonio Berardi, Nicole Fahri and Supermodel Caprice. Shakira Caine and Boy George were also there to see how the young designers had interpreted the theme 'Decadence'.
Jasper Conran pointed to the wearable nature of Declan's design despite the theme of 'Decadence'. He explained that the judges were unanimous in their decision that it was vital for the winner to demonstrate their ability to create clothes that would be commercially viable and not just shock the audience with their theatrical interpretations.
Antonio Berardi too believes that this year will set a precedent amongst young designers - to concentrate on looking at what is wearable. According to Berardi, fashion is wearable clothes.
Boy George, one of the guests at the show, prefers clothes to be extravagant and wild. He believes the fashion industry is too concerned about what sells and designers should be more brave in their styling.
The annual event, now in its thirteenth year, challenges thousands of design students from around the globe to create the most innovative design. In the industry the awards are also seen as being a catalyst to success for the world's most talented fashion students. It is a unique event and where designers from tomorrow showcase their skills in front of the entire fashion industry and with London firmly back on the map as a world leader in the fashion industry, the competition will be a unique opportunity for all of the students.
