- Story Text: In what has been dubbed as one of the most imaginative performances of this week's Rome alta moda (high fashion) shows, Italian designer Gai Mattiolo presented his vision of one thousand years of sin in a riveting show.
Greed, promiscuity, treachery and all sorts of human vices and sins of the the past millenium reigned over Rome's main catwalk on Tuesday (July 14).
In a series of striking theatrical performances held at one of Rome's most spectacular sites - the Roman "Bridge of Angels", Italian designer Gai Mattiolo presented his new autumn collection in which all individual items symbolised particular human vices.
The sins, ranging from the acceptance of kickbacks (a very relevant subject in Italy today), to slavery and greed were vividly personified by models on the catwalk.
The audience cheered as Naomi Campbell walked down a catwalk set up on the 'Bridge of Angels in a glitter see-through second-skin dress epitomising the sleekness of temptation with the Castle of Saint Angel' (Castel Sant'Angelo) looming behind.
The castle, flooded in red lights, made it appear as if the haute couture creations were coming straight from the gates of hell.
Glitter and see-through creations, long flowing capes and scarves were on display as models went up and down the catwalk presenting Mattiola's vision of the past sins of human kind and this autumn's fashion look.
A touching interlude froze the show into a minute's silence when homage was paid to Gianni Versace, the Italian designer who died exactly a year ago on Tuesday.
The Rome alta moda (high fashion) week, one of the most important fashion festivals in Italy, is due to end on Thursday night with the annual extravaganza of Italian fashion on the capital's Spanish Steps.
