- Story Text: An Irish hat designer and a husband and wife fashion team have stunned audiences at London Fashion Week with their differing visions of style and femininity.
Irish hat designer Philip Treacy received a standing ovation on Sunday (February 22) after presenting a stunning array of hats and headpieces to a packed audience of international buyers and journalists at London Fashion Week.
Treacy, who was born in a village on the west coast of Ireland, chose porcupine spines, elegant feathers and stiff netting to create a dramatic 1998 Autumn-Winter collection.
Drawing inspiration from the planets, hats sculpted from luminescent materials glowed as the lights were dimmed.
Treacy, who started designing hats when he was eighteen, said he was not worried about how practical his hats were.
"Fashion is not about practicality today, it's about inspiring people to dream, and thats why I make hats." he said.
The audience appeared to love his dream, gasping as each model appeared and clapping and hooting as they strutted up the catwalk.
Earlier, husband and wife team Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro focused on a more romantic look, combining opulant sequinned dresses with tailoring reminiscent of Elizabethan masculine costume.
The Clements Ribeiro 1998 Autumn Winter collection, called "Orlando," mixed simple, androgenous lines with rich fabrics and textures.
Mostly monochrome, the collection included some vibrant knitted twin-sets and tartan wraps, alongside more romantic 1920's influenced sequinned dresses.
Clements and Ribeiro trained at the renowned Central St.
Martins art school in London in the late 1980's, graduating 1991 with first class honours. They married in 1992 and spent some time in Brazil before returning to London in 1993 to set up their own label.
