- Story Text: South African designer Gordon Murray has built a new brabham racing car for the opening event of the 1974 World Championships -- the Argentines Grand Prix on January 19.
The new Brabham AT-44 weighs the minimum allowed for Formula One cars and has a new type of rising rate front suspension.
The Brabham team's top Argentine driver, Carlos Reutemann, and British ne???comer Richard Robarts have been trying out the new car on the Buenos Aires track. Three more of the cars are to be built at the Brabham headquarters in Surrey, England.
Robarts, the 29-year-old son of a farmer, takes the place of the retired Wilson Fittipaldi, elder brother of former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi.
Robert only graduated from Formula Four to Formula Three racing earlier this year but has already finished first in one Formula Three championship and third in another. Brabham team chief Bernard Eooleston says he is not expecting any quick results, but he is hopeful that Robarts can maintain his promise.
The South African Grand Prix in March has already been cancelled and this month's Brazilian Grand Prix is threatened by the world oil shortage but the Brabham team have bought six new Ford Grand prix engines in a determined effort to succeed this season.
Reutemann and Roberts will certainly face tough opposition at Buenos Aires...Emerson Fittipaldi has joined New Zealand star Denny Hulme in the newly formed Marlboro-Texaco team. Both men will drive 1974 McLarens.
