- Story Text: Avant-garde American designer Geoffrey B. Small held a fashion show with a difference on Wednesday (March 22) on the last day of the Paris autumn-winter pret-a-porter shows.
The models, men, women - and several who bridged the gender gap - strutted and pranced down the catwalk staging fake fights, throwing scraps of paper at the audience and flicking wigs made apparently from mop brushes.
The clothes they modelled were made from recycled garments - leather jackets spraypainted silver over satin side-slit skirts, a raincoat hemmed with a deep border of black velvet and gashed high at the back to reveal a glimpse of bare bottom.
An obese model wore a patchwork dress constructed from scraps of old clothes then reappeared in a smoking jacket strained across the stomach and worn over a lace T-shirt top and satin cycling shorts. Black leggings were wrinked down one leg and several models wore one neon pink net anklet above ankle boots.
There were satin jeans with knee cuts outlined in gold braid topped by silk painted waistcoats and woollen parkas, and a finale "wedding dress" of long blue material cut in strips and stapled together and decorated with a back pianting.
The show was low-budget, modelled and prepared by Small's Boston friends and designed as a protest against consumerism and the death of thrift, for young people who want to express their individuality.
