- Story Text: Established British designer Jasper Conran shows a simple, classic summer collection
inspired by Italian village life.
Neapolitan village life came to London Fashion Week on Wednesday
(September 21) with the spring/summer 2006 show of British designer Jasper Conran. Renowned for his classic monochrome tailoring, Conran was true to form with a largely black, white and grey collection. Models were sent down a catwalk decorated with laundry pegged on a line, wearing black headscarves like grieving Sicilian widows.
Despite the lack of colour, the collection had the feel of a baking
Mediterranean summer. Light summer dresses were fitted and cut to just below the knee, often with a flared hemline. Trousers were tight and cropped, worn with little tailored shirts open to the navel. For evening, dresses were long and lean in taffeta or silk.
When Conran broke away from monochrome, it was to feature pieces in
dusky pink, pale turquoise and lilac. The highlight of the show was a
floor-skimming black and grey evening dress with a feathered train.
Jasper Conran has established a reputation as Britain's foremost modern classicist. He is one of Britain's most commercially successful designers, known for his clean-lined, subtly tailored shapes and high-quality fabrics.
