- Story Text: Two of London Fashion Week's biggest names, Nicole
Farhi and Julien Macdonald have shown their Autumn/Winter
collections.
Established name Nicole Farhi showed a muted,
feminine autumn/winter collection on Tuesday (February 17).
Known for her wearable, flattering clothes, Farhi did
not disappoint with a show full of tailored woollen
trousers, belted trench coats, fitted twinsets and little
floaty tea dresses.
Coats and jackets skimmed the body. Trousers were
masculine with neat waistbands and long, slim legs. Dresses
were flirtatious with layers of chiffon, twinned with
printed cashmere knits.
Colours were muted; classic black, chocolate brown and
navy were accented with splashes of scarlet, fuschia and
lime green.
Attention to detail was evident in tiny sprinkles of
sequins on evening dresses, waistbands highlighted with
velvet ribbon and bright satin shoes. Jaunty berets
finished off the outfits.
Nicole Farhi is one of London Fashion Week's most
successful designers, with stores in London and New York.
She has been nominated eight times for the British Fashion
Awards - winning the Classics award in 1989 and the Best
Contemporary Designer award in 1995, 1996 and in 1997.
Born in France to Turkish parents, Farhi trained as a
designer at the Ecole Bercot in Paris. She moved to London
in 1973 to design for the 'French Connection' brand.
In 1983, Farhi started making clothes under her own
name. Her designs are worn by actresses Nicole Kidman, Cate
Blanchett, Kate Winslet and Renee Zellweger.
In a contrasting collection, high leather boots,
jodhpurs and riding accessories filled the catwalk at
Jasper Conran's hotly-anticipated equestrian-themed
autumn/winter show.
Conran, a classicist and one of the week's biggest
draws, dressed his models in knee-high boots, chalk leather
breeches, black leather gloves and wool jackets for his
collection.
Chocolate, plum and purple -- hailed as one of the "it"
colours at New York Fashion Week -- added dashes of
contrast to his trademark black and white. Fabrics were
velvet, wool, chiffon and lashings of leather.
Over-the-knee stiletto boots and long leather gloves
completed the look.
"It's an equestrian theme this season, it's all about,
sort of, the great country house party. Girls on horses and
stable lads and all that business: leather breeches,
jodhpurs, very high heeled boots," Conran said, giggling
loudly.
A London Fashion Week stalwart who has dabbled in
jewellery, china and cutlery lines, Conran said he plans to
open a shop in the city in September where he could play
with new ideas about retailing.
Designers Julien MacDonald, Jean Muir, Ghost and
Pringle are among the highlights on Wednesday at the
twice-yearly shop window.
