- Story Text: Roman fashion designer Andre Laug presented his collection for autumn and winter on Wednesday (23 July) along with other Italian designers hoping to dictate the style of clothes for the coming seasons.
It might have been a sign of the hard economic times that there was not much evidence of the usual Italian flamboyance. Clothes were in classical lines. The "big dress" of last year had completely disappeared. Hemlines remained at calf length but skirts were straight and most suitable for those with sylph-like figures.
Laug included in his collection a knitted daywear suit for which the Italians are famous. It was teamed with baggy boots which were also in vogue last year.
Like other designers, he has settled on a more total look, rather than separates, for daywear.
His evening wear collection was mixture of designs without any real trend. One of the more spectacular designs was a clinging ankle-length dress in white with a shawl of white feathers.
SYNOPSIS: In Rome, it is that time of year when the salons of successful fashion designers are buzzing. Leading couture designer Andre Laug is among the Italian designers showing off their latest collections. This knitted suit was one of his innovations for autumn and winter.
Laug has joined trendsetting designers who are settling for the total look. This black and white checked suit with fur trim is his idea of how the fashionable woman should look when the cold weather arrives. The casual look of separates has all but disappeared. The designs did not reflect the traditional Italian flamboyance. Elegance was the keynote.
Black and white appeared again in the evening section...it has never really disappeared since the reliable "little black dress" look. This time it was an elaborate sequined jacket, white silk blouse and long black skirt.
Andre Laug dared to step away from the sleeker lines of this season with the gathered fold of this long evening skirt. Its subdued colours were set off with a stunning red shirt.
The most noticeable creation was his dove-like design for evening. This was a clinging white dress teamed with a shawl of white feathers.
