- Story Text: Design firms in New York use cans of food to create
coloruful and creative works.
With an endless number of cans lying around one
would think they have arrived at a grocery story or
supermarket, but the folks moving these canned goods are
not stocking shelves, they're constructing clever and
intricate structures.
'Canstruction' is an annual competition that is the
brain child of the One Can, a charity set up through
members of the design and architecture community. Using
mostly cans of food, teams from various New York area
design, architecture and engineering firms, along with
students volunteers, compete to build the most lavish
structure in one night.
Stanley Tucci, Hollywood actor and national
spokesperson for the competition explained the rules.
"The design and architectural firms come in with
people that were appointed by them, and these are the
people that have designed them, and they build these
structures throughout the night. So they stay up all night
building these structures and they're not allowed to go in
and look at each others structures, and they have very
specific guidelines, they can only use half-inch foam core
or plywood, they can use tape, and we try not to encourage
them to use any kind of props, just to use the cans
themselves," Tucci said.
While the end product might be colourful and clever,
building these structures is not just fun, it's serious
business.
"We look for structural ingenuity, we look for best use
of label, we look for best meal and then we have one that's
just a jurors favourite that really is sort of attractive
and fun and interesting," Tucci explained. " And it's
really fascinating, I've been doing this for seven years
now to see what people come up with and some of really work
just so beautifully and are sculptures themselves and
others fail miserably but they might be a good meal," he
added.
After a night of can-struction, a team of design
experts is brought in to judge the various works. With a
meticulous eye, the judges pick over each entry and come up
with awards in several categories.
This year's winner for structural ingenuity went to
"Manhattan Can Chowder" by Platt Byard Dovell While
Architects.
The 'Jurors' Favourite' was "An American Classic," a
work depicting a hot dog bun with mustard and Ketchup
bottles behind.
'A Call To Arms,' an octopus-like design won an
honourable mention along with 'A Can-o-ramic View of The
Brooklyn Bridge,' winner of the Best Meal Award.
At the end of the contest, the cans of food are
distributed to The Food Bank For New York City, which in
turn distribute the food to soup kitchens, pantries and day
care centres.
While contestants need basic qualifications of
architecture and engineering, another important asset is a
can- do attitude!
