- Story Text:Two vessels carrying just over 800 metric tons of food supplies were sent to Cuba on Sunday (February 8), the Mexican government said, amid tensions between the Latin American nation and the United States, which has threatened to impose tariffs on countries that supply crude oil to the Caribbean island.
Both vessels, the Holbox and the Papaloapan, departed from the port of Veracruz on Mexico's Gulf Coast with 814 tons of aid, including "liquid milk, meat products, cookies, beans, rice, tuna in water, sardines and vegetable oil, as well as personal hygiene items," the government said in a statement.
Last week, Mexican officials said they were assessing how to send fuel to Cuba to help meet the island's basic needs, such as electricity and transportation, without triggering reprisals from Washington.
