- Story Text:Security was heightened in India's northeastern Manipur after fresh violent clashes, which left several houses and vehicles burnt, broke out between two local tribal communities - Naga and Kuki, said media reports on Monday (February 9).
Local administration issued a prohibitory orders, after at least 20 houses were set ablaze by the mob on Sunday.
Charred debris and gutted structures marked the aftermath of the violence as security personnel patrolled the area to prevent further escalation.
"Just now it's burning, so we couldn't calculate, maybe 20 plus now… and the government has assured to give them some assistance to compensate their losses," said Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, who was visiting the incident site 's Ukhrul district.
Some 260 people have been killed and more than 60,000 displaced since clashes first broke out between Manipur's dominant, mostly Hindu Meitei community and the mainly Christian Kuki tribes in May 2023 over economic benefits and job quotas. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
