- Story Text: Dozens of relatives of political prisoners gathered outside Venezuela's National Assembly in Caracas on Tuesday (February 10) to demand the swift release of their loved ones and greater participation in discussions over a proposed amnesty law.
The demonstrators, holding banners and chanting slogans, called for immediate freedom for detainees they say have been unjustly imprisoned, with some families reporting they have not seen their relatives for months and do not know if they are alive.
First Deputy President of the National Assembly Pedro Jose Infante and deputy Jorge Arreaza, president of the special commission for the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence, met with the families and escorted them into the assembly.
The amnesty law was approved in first discussion on February 5, though no date has been set for a second debate, according to Infante.
Relatives denounced what they described as cruel treatment and torture at detention centers, such as El Rodeo 1 prison, and said authorities have denied them access to their family members.
