- Story Text: Farmers in India's northern Punjab state staged a protest on Wednesday (February 11) over the interim India-U.S. trade deal, as they burnt effigies of leaders of both the countries.
The India-U.S. joint statement suggested that New Delhi pushed back against Washington's efforts to broadly open its agricultural market. However, India has agreed to lower trade barriers on some farm goods, drawing criticism from farmers and opposition parties.
The protesting farmers said the terms and conditions of the deal flag several issues which can be detrimental to the agriculture sector.
Indian farmers union's are set to organise a nationwide strike over the deal on Thursday (February 12).
Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal has said the pact provides zero-tariff access to the U.S. market for certain Indian farm products, including bananas and mangoes, as part of agreed agricultural trade concessions.
Nearly 80% of Indian farmers are smallholders, owning two hectares of land or less, which limits their income. But farmers form an influential voting bloc, and successive governments have sought to avoid angering millions of growers. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
