- Story Text: NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Thursday (February 12) that he is confident that flow of “vital U.S. equipment into Ukraine” will continue.
Speaking in Brussels after a meeting of the alliance’s defence ministers, Rutte also said it is important for Ukraine to have sufficient security guarantees as part of the peace negotiations to deter any future aggression, and praised how U.S. President Donald Trump "broke the deadlock" in peace negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin last year.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not attend Thursday’s meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels, with Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby, who holds the Pentagon's No. 3 post, representing the U.S. instead.
Hegseth’s absence marks the second time in a row that a top Trump administration official has skipped a NATO meeting, after Secretary of State Marco Rubio missed a gathering of the alliance's foreign ministers in December.
