- Story Text: Carolina Herrera celebrated female artists "whose work and influence have shaped the landscape of art" during its runway show at New York Fashion Week on Thursday (February 12).
Creative designer Wes Gordon welcomed seven women from various parts of the art world to walk in the show. American painter Amy Sherald, French artist Anh Duong, and photographer Ming Smith were among those who shared the runway with high fashion models. Gordon expressed his surprise and pleasure that they all agreed to grace the runway.
"The collection began with an inspiration of women in the arts. My mood board just started filling with amazing women ranging from collectors and curators to painters, sculptors, and photographers. It felt like a natural extension in a moment where fashion needs to be personal, storytelling, and fun to ask these women to be a part of our show today," said Gordon.
Previous decades also served as inspiration for the show.
"We were founded in 1981 by a woman who embodies '80s glam. You definitely saw it—there was a series of jackets, one in ivory, one in black, and one in leopard with a very sculpted shoulder. So there's that '80s energy. There was some '90s energy with the slingback kitten heels and pencil skirts, plays with transparency. I even went for a little Capote New York energy with some of the rounded jacket shapes and coats."
Herrera planted florals for fall, black and white animal print, and its signature bold red, with ribboned ruffles, gold column dresses, and classic pant suits rounding out the line.
At the end of the show, Gordon shared a rare moment with the brand's namesake: "The first time she sees the collection is at the show. I always look to her for a reaction, and today she actually stood up and gave me a hug, which was really special and beautiful. I think that was the first time she's done that, so it was really beautiful." New York Fashion Week will run until February 16, with nearly 60 brands showing collections.
