- Story Text:Water levels at a major dam near the Portuguese city of Coimbra were rising on Friday (February 13) prompting fears it could overflow, authorities said.
The Aguieira dam and reservoir on the Mondego River edged back from 99% overnight, but further rain expected on Friday afternoon could make it overflow and cause severe flooding downriver, the city council said.
A powerful flow poured through its gates, sending spray high into the air as authorities performed a controlled discharge to easy the pressure.
Portugal's Civil Protection emergency services said on Friday night there was no need for the evacuation of Coimbra as rains were not as intense as earlier in the day.
