- Story Text: With the United States and Denmark preparing to play a men's ice hockey game on Saturday (February 14), the geopolitical tensions between the two countries were overshadowing the sporting encounter at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.
The group C fixture has been dubbed 'the battle for Greenland' given U.S. President Donald Trump's recent remarks threatening to wrest the mineral-rich semi-autonomous territory from their NATO ally.
Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen met U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Munich Security Conference on Friday where they had 'constructive' discussion over the Arctic island's future.
Back on the ice, the United States' boast a roster replete with National Hockey League All-Stars and are heavy favourites having opened the tournament with a statement 5-1 win over Latvia.
Denmark, meanwhile, lost their opener 3-1 to Germany but will look to other Olympic underdog stories for motivation, none more so than the fabled 'Miracle on Ice' when the 1980 U.S. hosts upset a heavily favoured Soviet Union in the final with a team made-up of amateur and collegiate players.
