- Story Text:Greenpeace staged a protest on Friday (February 13) in Munich, unveiling a large anti-fossil gas banner and inflatables of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to highlight European reliance on U.S. and Russian energy imports.
"Europe's strength depends on our energy security," Greenpeace energy expert Lisa Goeldner said, criticizing the European Union's increasing imports of U.S. fracked gas. "That is making us vulnerable to pressure from Trump. Whenever we're talking about security, we also have to talk about energy sovereignty. Only renewables keep Europe independent," she said.
The demonstration coincided with the Munich Security Conference, during which ten Greenpeace activists also displayed the banner—bearing "Break Free From Tyrants"—from a crane.
