- Story Text: Gisele Pelicot, who survived years of being raped while unconscious by her then-husband and dozens of other men he recruited, is set to publish a memoir on Tuesday (February 17) about her life and experiences of the case which shocked France and attracted worldwide attention.
Pelicot, 73, said on Wednesday (February 11) in a television interview she wanted the book to be a "symbol of hope" for other women suffering from abuse.
The book, titled 'A Hymn To Life: Shame Has To Change Sides' in English, will be released in various languages and covers Pelicot's childhood, career and marriage, as well as the trial that made headlines across the globe.
Pelicot became a feminist hero both at home and abroad for waiving her right to anonymity and standing up to her abusers in court, turning the trial into an examination of the pervasiveness of sexual violence.
Dominique Pelicot, who admitted drugging his wife and recruiting dozens of men online to rape her while she was unconscious over nearly a decade, was sentenced to 20 years in jail in December 2024.
All of his 50 co-defendants were also found guilty of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. An appeal last year by one of them, Husamettin Dogan, was rejected and his sentence was increased by a year.
