- Story Text: Three French departments remained on high alert for flooding on Tuesday (February 17), with towns in parts of the west and the southwest submerged as high water levels are expected to descend slowly.
Weather service Meteo France maintained a red alert for flooding, its highest warning, for the Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde, where Bordeaux - one of France's biggest cities - is located, as well as for the Maine-et-Loire department, around Angers.
In the two southwestern French departments, nearly 1,600 people have been evacuated after the Garonne River spilled over starting last week as Storm Nils brought heavy precipitation.
"It's a bit catastrophic, especially for business owners, for all the people who have been affected. I think there's quite big damage in the town and in surrounding towns, so yes, it's sad to see this," said Florence Rajoie-Gauthier, a real estate agent in Cadillac-sur-Garonne, in Gironde.
Fourteen other French departments were on orange alert for flooding on Tuesday.
Meteo France has issued red alerts for the three departments in advance for Wednesday (February 18) when more rains are expected across western France.
