- Story Text: French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez met his Algerian counterpart Said Sayoud during a visit to Algeria on Monday (February 16) in a move seen as a sign of easing tensions between the two countries.
Ties between Paris and Algiers have deteriorated since July 2024 when France recognised Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara, which Rabat wants the international community to recognise as Moroccan.
In November 2025, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune pardoned the French-Algerian writer, Boualem Sansal, who was arrested and sentenced to five years in jail for undermining national unity.
The case had strained already difficult relations between Algeria and its colonial-era master France.
