- Story Text: Canadian Armed Forces personnel conducted a drill simulating an enemy attack on a vehicle checkpoint on Wednesday (February 18) in freezing Arctic conditions.
Troops advanced through the snow in coordinated movements, detaining opposing role‑players and extracting simulated casualties as part of the exercise, Major Lyle Borody of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment said.
The drills are being conducted alongside local Indigenous communities and territorial partners, combining military capability with traditional knowledge essential for surviving the region’s harsh conditions.
This year’s Operation Nanook unfolds against a backdrop of increased geopolitical attention on the Arctic, following comments by U.S. president Donald Trump regarding control over Greenland.
