- Story Text: U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday (February 17) that U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was deeply saddened by the death of Rev. Jesse Jackson, hailing him as a giant of the civil rights movement in the U.S. and a longtime champion of human rights, equality and justice around the world.
In a statement, the U.N. chief said Jackson lent his powerful voice to the United Nations’ work against racism and apartheid and in support of universal human rights. He noted that Jackson participated in a number of events at U.N. headquarters over the years, helping amplify global efforts to advance dignity and equality.
The secretary-general said Jackson’s legacy extended far beyond the U.S., inspiring generations through his advocacy for justice and inclusion on the international stage.
