- Story Text: Brazil’s first-ever Winter Olympic medallist, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, brought a Brazilian carnival celebration to the frigid Italian Alps on Wednesday (February 18) in celebration of his historic gold medal.
The alpine skier won the giant slalom on Saturday (February 14), becoming the first person representing South America to medal in the Winter Games.
The fun-loving showman competed with the words ‘Vamos Dancar,’ Portuguese for ‘Let’s Dance,’ inscribed on his helmet, and with carnival celebrations winding down back home in Brazil, that’s exactly what he did at the top of the snow-covered mountain in the Olympic host village of Livigno.
“It is when you’re the happiest that everything is possible. And that’s the state I like to live in,” he told the crowd before wrapping a Brazilian flag around his shoulders and dancing to Brazilian music.
While showing his moves off on stage, the Norway-born Brazilian stopped to sign autographs and take selfies with adoring fans.
He was joined by dancers and a Brazilian pagode band on stage that played music typical of Brazilian carnival celebrations.
“The best carnivals are the ones in the mountains, of course. The best of both worlds,” the 25-year-old told Reuters.
