- Story Text: Many residents of the French city of Lyon said on Saturday (February 21) they felt tense ahead of a march in homage to Quentin Deranque, a far-right activist who was beaten to death in a fight that was caught on camera and shocked the nation.
A handful of flowers and posters adorned the Lyon street where the beating took place ahead of the march.
"It's crazy. Actually, I don't have the words, I don't know, it's like we've returned to the 1930s. It's crazy," Lyon resident Clara Dournel said.
Police are concerned the marches could turn violent, with clashes between opposing groups.
The march in Lyon, the city where Deranque, 23, was killed and where there is a concentration of far-right and antifascist groups, starts at 3 p.m. (1400GMT). The interior ministry estimates that between 2,000 and 3,000 people will attend. There are smaller marches planned in a number of other French towns.
French President Emmanuel Macron called for calm ahead of nationwide rallies planned on Saturday in memory of Deranque.
He said that he would hold a meeting next week with the prime minister and relevant ministers on violent groups.
