- Story Text: Indonesia and the United States on Thursday (February 19) finalized a trade deal to cut U.S. levies to 19% from 32% on goods shipped from Southeast Asia's biggest economy, with Jakarta securing tariff exemptions for its top export, palm oil, and several other commodities.
The agreement was signed in Washington by Indonesia's senior economic minister Airlangga Hartarto and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer after months of negotiations.
Indonesia operates the largest economy in Southeast Asia. Its economy relies heavily on natural resources, with coal, palm oil, natural gas and nickel among its top exports.
It's the world's largest producer of palm oil and its nickel reserves — the world's largest — have become increasingly valuable for electric vehicle battery production. Manufacturing accounts for about 20 percent of GDP, including textiles, automotive assembly and electronics.
