- Story Text: Slovenia's opposition Democratic Party on Saturday (February 21) laid out its ambition to win next month's general election.
SDS Leader Janez Jansa rallied members at a party congress meeting and said it will run on a mandate to "build and create" for the country.
"The Slovenian Democratic Party is today and in the foreseeable future the only party strong enough, experienced and sovereign to represent an alternative to what we have been experiencing in recent years," he added.
Since June 2022, Slovenia has been run by the centre-left coalition government of Prime Minister Robert Golob, comprising ministers from Golob's Freedom Movement party, Social Democrats and The Left party.
Janez Jansa is Slovenia's former Prime Minister and the populist SDS opposition leader has remained the bloc's strongest opposition.
Slovenia will hold parliamentary elections on March 22 after President Natasa Pirc-Musar signed a decree calling for a poll in the NATO and European Union member state, in what will likely be a closely-contested race.
