- Story Text: Hundreds of residents of President Goodluck Jonathan's home village of Otuoke celebrated on Tuesday (April 19) his election victory.
Waving flags and dancing to traditional songs, revellers partied well into the evening.
Jonathan secured election victory on Sunday (April 17) as votes were tallied from around Nigeria, but his victory fuelled anger in the mainly-Muslim strongholds of rival, former army ruler Muhammadu Buhari.
Observers have called Saturday's (April 16) elections transparent, free and fair.
Most Nigerians who voted for Jonathan said he would bring about positive change to the country.
Buhari's camp said some results looked suspicious, especially where turnout had been exceptionally high. In a sign of the growing tension in the north, youths set up burning barricades in several cities.
Meanwhile, Jonathan appealed for unity after deadly riots erupted in largely Muslim opposition strongholds over his election victory on Monday (April 18).
Churches, homes and shops were set ablaze and the Red Cross said many people were killed, hundreds injured and thousands displaced in the outburst of anger by supporters of Jonathan's defeated northern rival. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
