- Story Text: Two explosions hit the southern state of Bayelsa in the oil-producing Niger Delta late on Friday (January 20, 2012) but no one was killed.
Local police said the attacks were not linked to Boko Haram, who have claimed responsibility for a string of attacks in the city of Kano on the same day.
The blasts hit a bridge near government house in the state's capital of Yenagoa.
"It was around 11pm, we just heard it because we were at home then. We heard some shouts and then the sound "boom" and thought it is just ordinary motor backfire. So then somebody called us who said, "You should come to the market." So we come to market and all of our shops were scattered. So some people thought it was Boko Haram sect, but nobody can identify what happened," witness, Nanamani Sunday, said on Saturday (January 21).
Bayelsa, the home state of President Goodluck Jonathan, is holding a governorship election next month.
Troops have been deployed in the state in recent weeks to stem any political unrest.
"We just heard "boom." The blast happened late in the night right under my mother's store," witness, Grace Bowei, said.
In Kano, seven people were killed on Friday after coordinated bomb attacks on security forces that were claimed by the Boko Haram.
The attacks prompted the government to announce a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the city of more than 10 million people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
