- Story Text: Travellers expressed frustration and concern on Saturday (February 28) at Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris, after Air France cancelled multiple international flights, after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, plunging the region into a renewed military confrontation.
Flight maps showed airspace over Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel and Bahrain virtually empty as Israel said it struck Iran and the U.S. military initiated a series of strikes against targets in the country. Iran retaliated with a salvo of missiles.
"Unfortunately, our whole trip from our school was cancelled, so we're no longer going to Dubai," said Benjamin Gnatek, a student from Michigan State University, whose group trip to the world's busiest travel hub Dubai was disrupted.
"Dubai has been pretty isolated for the most part, but it's still a scary situation," he added.
Gnatek noted that some students who had arrived earlier in Dubai were now stranded there.
Air France announced the cancellation of all flights scheduled for February 28 and March 1 to and from Tel Aviv, Beirut, Dubai, and Riyadh, citing the "security situation at destination."
The airline assured passengers of "commercial measures" to accommodate impacted travellers, emphasizing that the safety of its customers and crew remains a top priority.
The company added that it is closely monitoring the geopolitical situation in regions served and flown over to ensure the highest levels of safety and security. Decisions regarding flights to these destinations in the coming days remain pending, the airline said.
