At least 18 people were killed and scores were critically injured in India's southern Andhra Pradesh state in an explosion at a firecracker factory on Saturday (February 28).
The incident occurred in Kakinada district at a local firecracker manufacturing unit.
Most of the victims of the deadly explosion were women, said local media.
"Pained by the loss of lives in the explosion at a factory in Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh. I extend my condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.
An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM @narendramodi," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a social media post.
Industrial accidents are common in India and are often blamed on people flouting safety norms, as well as lax inspection by government officials. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
